I’d consider myself a music guy, a musician even — I listen to a lot of music. But look back over the last couple of years of my run selfies on Instagram and you’ll not find many with me wearing earphones.
I think I have funny shaped ear holes or something. I’ve always struggled with finding comfortable earbuds that will a) sit in my ear canals comfortably for an extended period, and b) not fall out or need readjusting during exercise.
For this reason I mostly go without. It just hasn’t been worth the hassle…
Recently I have had the opportunity to try a pair of AfterShokz Trekz Airs — earphones that don’t even go in your ears. That is because they use bone conduction technology!

It was felt so good to get back out on the trails at the weekend. It was my first time trail running since RAD in early December. It is also the first time I have ran the trails (bar the fire roads) over at Umstead State Park.
Saturday was such a beautiful day. The sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky. The temperature was right around 60°F. Perfect running weather.
Only I didn’t run on Saturday, oh no! I ran on Sunday morning in the rain instead! At least it was still 50°F.

Most of my weekday runs happen before the sun comes up, so that means a lot of road running in the dark. It wasn’t long ago I read a post on our community Facebook page complaining about runners seen early in the morning wearing dark clothing. Yep, that was referring to our running club for sure, and a warning that we were not doing enough to be visible.

I just signed up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in Raleigh, NC on April 8th. It’ll be my second ever Half Marathon and my first time running a Rock ‘n’ Roll series race.
(I’m very excited about how my race schedule is shaping up. It’s only January and I already have more races on my 2018 calendar than I raced last year).
I love the buzz of BIG races, and running through city streets with thousands of other runners. Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh hosted 9000 runners last year! How could I pass up this opportunity to run the streets of Raleigh, when I only live down the road?!
I’ve known about the Rock ‘n’ Roll series races for a number of years, but was not running at the level needed to sign up for a half or full marathon. This year that is changing. I’m running my first half in March this year, and then the Rock ‘n’ Roll half in April.

Hands up — who likes a bit of chafing? Anyone? No?
Didn’t think so. No-one likes that. So when the opportunity arose to test an anti-chafing solution, called 2skin from pjuractive, I quickly volunteered.
Fortunately, I don’t experience chafing on a regular basis, and while that’s a blessing it also has a undesired side effect — unpreparedness! So when chafing hits unexpectedly, it can leave me hurting for a day or two.

In 2017, I logged a total of 1132.5 miles. That’s an average of 94 miles a month, or 22 miles a week, or a 5K every single day!
I ran a total of 226 times. This means every time I left for a run, I ran an average of 5 miles.
It’s weird now as a runner, that being sick is worse because I can’t get out to run. I was out sick and unable to run for 21 days in 2017.
All of that running took 184 hours and 7 mins, which means my average pace was around 9.45/mi — this includes road, trail, stroller runs etc.
