Last week we headed to the Outer Banks for the first time.
We rented the movie Nights In Rodanthe a couple of nights before as it was based on Hatteras Island where we would be staying. Even though it has squinty-eyed Richard Gere in the film, it was actually not too bad.
The actual drive to the outer banks was not disappointing either. I loved going over the long bridges between the islands. The kids loved crossing Alligator river swearing every ripple was a large Alligator.
We had a camp fire on the beach for the first time.
On Hatteras Island you do not need a permit to light a small camp fire below the high tide line. We waited until the sun started to go down and dug a little fire pit. We soon had a fire going strong. We melted marshmallows and made s’mores.
My kids flew kites on the beach for the first time.
We intended to take the ferry to Oracoke Island on the Tuesday, but when we got down there the wait was too long. So instead of wasting our day waiting we went into Kitty Hawk Kites and purchased a couple of kites. We then headed off to the beach and flew them for a while. After that we went for a long walk and collected seashells.
I snorkelled with my kids for the first time.
Before we left we bought some snorkels and diving masks. The beauty of the Outer Banks is that you have the Sea on one side and the Sounds on the other side. We spent the whole afternoon snorkelling in Pamlico Sound, watching the little fish swim underneath us.
We touched a reticulated python for the first time.
On the way home we went to visit the Aquarium on Roanoke Island. We were just in time for a fantastic reptile show where we seen turtles, alligator snapping turtles, crocodiles, anacondas and finally the giant reticulated python.
Relish the first time.
Because those are the times you remember.
