When We Think We Have It All Worked Out

13Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. 17Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.

(James 4:13-17)

These verses struck me recently.  Our future is not ours to determine.  We might just be wasting our time sketching out our 5 year plans and objectives.  Yes, we can have dreams and aspirations, but we have to believe they will only become a reality “if it is the Lord’s will…”.

A couple of weeks back I grew a little concerned about our future.  I realized how much control is actually not in my hands.  However, I was also suddenly aware that I was reacting more on the actions of men than of God.  The following verse reaffirmed for me who is actually in control – God is!

22 Stop trusting in man,
who has but a breath in his nostrils.
Of what account is he?

(Isaiah 2:22)

It is uncovering God’s will that should be our priority.  Only then will our life’s real purpose become apparent.  I’m still learning this and  I’m still seeking what God’s will is for me.  I know He has a purpose for me and I feel something big is just on the horizon.  I’m excited what God has in store for me and my family.

Remember, no-one can thwart God’s purpose for your life.  No-one.

11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?

(Psalm 56:11)

this has been such a huge theme in our lives this last year. to trust God with our future is so hard. we want all the details now but i guess then there would be no room for trust. in God i trust; i will not be afraid. oh man, i wish i could say i have not been afraid or that i am not currently worried and fretting. thank you for sharing these verses. they encourage my heart to keep trusting even when it is hard.

Amen. Been learning this the past year and it hurts sometimes. My husband and I are learning to just trust in God and give him control of our life. The flesh hates it. But we are strengthened in Christ.
