I really enjoyed Sunday morning and had so much fun with the band. There seemed to be a real freedom and excitement to worship in the room and I want to see that more. I want us to keep running after God like that – desiring more of His presence in our worship.
We have sung How He Loves many times now, but on Sunday it felt really fresh. It was great to pull away from the microphone and hear everyone sing out the chorus. A real sweet moment.
I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!
- Psalm 119:32
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
- Philippians 3:12-14
Let’s keep running after Jesus, Story Church!

- I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever – Martin Smith (G)
We played an acoustic set this week. Usually we use one or two acoustics, but this week Darrell switched between his acoustic and a keyboard, and I was on my acoustic. The keyboard definitely gave us a fuller sound than previous acoustic sets.
I thought the scripture readings worked well and helped to set up some of the songs we were singing.
I missed the drums a lot in the first two songs, but I loved some of the fills that Darrell was able to pull off on his guitar that would not have been heard with a drum kit on stage.
While an acoustic set does bring a different feeling to our service than what we’re used to, that’s all it is – a feeling. As a congregation we’re still coming together to worship the God of the universe, and we did that. God’s presence on Sunday morning was undeniable.

Another great Sunday at Story Church. Very proud of the band on Sunday when we swapped out Reign In Us with Our God 2 mins before going back on after the sermon. I love that we can have that flexibility to follow where we feel God is leading.

Easter was a big weekend for us. Here are some wins we should celebrate coming out of it.
Egg Durham
- The project raised awareness for the Durham Literacy Center.
- Egg Durham, Durham Literacy Center and Story Church got a write-up in the newspaper.
- Story Church face painters did an amazing job at Durham Easter along side Vintage 21 (another great Raleigh/Durham church).
Story Church Easter Service
- Our service was held in the very grand Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham.
- Acoustics were much better. We even took away Bruce’s protective shield.
- We had lighting control! Hallelujah!
- There were more 1st time visitors than we’ve ever had at Story Church.
- Two people started a relationship with Jesus that morning and angels rejoiced!
- As always, Story Church volunteers stepped up to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Sunday was great. I love it when we are given the chance to respond to the message in different ways. Sometimes that can bring us a little out of our comfort zone, but it’s those moments of trust (“God either you do something special here, or I just look like a wally…”) that God often blows us away. I want to encourage you to step out at these opportunities - think Peter stepping out of the boat, or those guys and their paralyzed friend taking someone’s roof off.
Church is not about finding the perfect formula and settling on it. Instead it should be a group of people passionately pursuing Jesus in whatever way it takes – and that just might appear crazy sometimes.
The key song in this week’s set for me was God Is Able. I shared a few weeks back about our house in the UK. We’re still riding that roller coaster and every time we pass the start we’re asking God, “I feel sick, can we get off?”.
The latest blow was our central-heating boiler would not work for the new tenants. Organizing a plumber from 3000 miles away is not easy. The first couple of guys to visit the property had all sorts of doom and gloom to report. The outlook was not good. I kept pushing back on their advice so I could have our original plumber visit and give his opinion.
Meanwhile, earlier in the week I was putting the set list together. I often hear a lot of negative discussion about worship songs being so positive and people can’t sing them were they are at. Blah blah blah. I can understand this at times and do not exclude psalms of lament by any means, but sometimes we just need to speak the words – even when we don’t feel like it. We need to declare His greatness. We need to declare our love for Him. We need to speak out in faith.
This is why I selected God Is Able – I still believed this. Sometimes I have no idea what He is doing and wonder why He won’t let us off the roller coaster, but I know He is able. I know He knows what He is doing. I know he sees the big picture. I know and trust He is in control. I have to.
I guess that is one of the positives of feeling totally helpless in a situation – I turn to God. I cannot imagine what it would be like to face these situations and not know God is there for me.
I finally got in touch with our original plumber and he went to visit the property the next day. There was no leak. There was no floors that needed jack-hammered. There simply wasn’t enough water in the system.
God Is Able!
Hang on, we’re passing the start again, “God, can we get off nowwwwwww…???”
Dang, not yet.

It was another great morning at Story Church!
Joel Philbrook preached for the first time and did an awesome job! Well done, Joel! You can read more on Joel’s journey at his blog, or over at Share My Story.
The band introduced “Oh You Bring“, which is a new song for us. I thought that went over quite well. I love the way the song cuts to the bridge – “all honour, all glory, all praise to You…” – and then builds through that.
I do not say this enough – there does not exist a nicer group of people to work with than the Story Church worship team – seriously. I am blessed, and you are blessed to have these guys give of themselves week after week.
So, it’s especially saddening when someone leaves. Mitchell “Forever” Wallace is moving to DC and we’re going to miss him. His favorite song to play was “Forever” by Chris Tomlin, so I often slipped it into the set list for him when he came to play for us. ;-)
Mitchell, thank you so much for all your input over the last year. May God be with you in every choice you need to make. Keep embracing the story you are meant to live. ;-)
