On March 13th, Paul Baloche releases a new studio album, The Same Love.
Even if you have never heard of Paul Baloche, you have probably sang one of his songs if you have attended a church for any length of time.
Paul has been involved in worship ministry for a long time now. On top of his recording projects with Integrity, Paul is also very active in leading worship workshops, penning books and making resources freely available for worship leaders like myself.
Due to this mass of experience that Paul has, I was expecting to hear a set of solid, congregation friendly songs. I was not disappointed. It’s got a different feel to it than previous Paul Baloche records but I love that there has been so much collaboration on it.
The recording features a mix of guest vocalists and co-writers, including Ben Fielding (Hillsong), Kari Jobe, Lincoln Brewster, Jason Ingram, Kathryn Scott, All Sons & Daughters and others.
The title track, The Same Love, is one of the best tracks. It’s upbeat and catchy and quickly gets into the chorus. It’s easy to see why it’s been selected as the first radio single from the project.
We Are Saved is great, and has a real Hillsong vibe to it especially with Ben Fielding adding his vocals on it.
I did not expect to hear what I think is banjo on a Baloche record. King Of Heaven quickly became one of my favorite tracks on the album. Paul is joined by All Sons & Daughters – and a banjo. Awesome.
All Because Of The Cross is a version of the old hymn, Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus. I like it. It reminded me a lot of Page CXVI’s hymn project. The new chorus works well here and it’s definitely a version we could use in church.
Your Blood Ran Down is a short, simple but moving song. I use songs like this to bridge other songs, or just as the moment takes me. It’s easy for people to pick up in an instant and really worship.
After listening to this album, I kept finding myself humming the melody to My Hope. Love it – what a catchy melody! I just found out that it’s Kathryn Scott that lends her vocals here. Now I like it even more that we have some Northern Irish representation on here. Ha.
Oh My Lord! When this song hits the bridge you will be blown away.
Need a good upbeat Easter song? I can see Christ The Lord working for a lot of churches on Easter Sunday – “Christ the Lord is risen today / The lamb of God has taken our sins away…”
Reign In Me, written with Jason Ingram, Just Say, written with the Brothers McClurg, and Loved By You, written with Lincoln Brewster are great songs but I have yet to connect with them in the same way as the other songs.
Look Upon The Lord is awesome. Kari Jobe sings on this track with Paul. The chorus reminds me a little of Matt Redman’s song “Let Your Glory Fall”. Great lyrics.
The album ends with a big anthem, Shout For Joy.
In summary, a great worship album from Paul Baloche, jam packed full of great tunes for your church.
